CCNA study plan for beginners (12 weeks)
You do not need prior IT experience: Cisco lists no prerequisites for the CCNA. You do need a plan, hands-on labs and steady practice. This plan assumes one to two hours a day.
Before week 1
- Read the official CCNA exam topics and study to the published weights.
- Pick one main course. The free Jeremy's IT Lab CCNA playlist covers the whole 200-301 syllabus.
- Install Cisco Packet Tracer (free with a Networking Academy account).
The 12-week schedule

How to study each topic
- Watch the lesson.
- Rebuild the lab yourself without the video.
- Write the key commands from memory.
- Answer practice questions and read why each wrong option is wrong.
Subnetting every day
Spend 15 minutes a day on subnetting from week 3 until the exam. Use the subnet lab and read our subnetting guide.
Final two weeks
Take full-length practice exams under time pressure, redo the labs for your weakest domain, and review the command cheat sheet. Remember that the real exam is 120 minutes and, per Cisco, costs US$300 and results arrive online within 48 hours.
Exam-day tips
- Read each question twice; wording matters.
- Flag long simulations and return to them.
- If you fail, wait five calendar days before retaking, and use the score report to target weak domains.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to study for the CCNA?
Many beginners need around 3 months at 1–2 hours a day. Your pace depends on your background and how much lab time you do.
Can I pass the CCNA without experience?
Yes. Cisco says the CCNA assumes little to no networking knowledge, but you must practise subnetting and the command line in labs.
What is the best free CCNA course?
Jeremy's IT Lab full CCNA playlist on YouTube is widely used and covers the whole 200-301 exam.
